Title:

Technology and Suicide Prevention: Evidence, Ethics and Future Directions

Dr Jay-Marie Mackenzie is a Reader (Associate Professor) at the University of Westminster, with over 15 years of experience of working in suicide prevention. She works collaboratively with organisations to understand the context in which suicides occur, and through research, informs organisations about how best to tailor their suicide prevention approaches to their industry’s environment and context. Her research focuses on understanding suicide in context at a range of locations such as probation settings, railways, coasts, highways, and considers suicide in populations ranging from ex-offenders to students. Her research explores suicide using multiple perspectives including people who have attempted suicide, professionals, and lay people who have witnessed or intervened in a suicide. To facilitate early interventions, she has researched specific behaviours people might display before attempting suicide in public spaces. Mackenzie’s current work focusses on the potential role of technology in helping to identify people in distress, and the role of technology in aiding human-led interventions.
