Rethinking Suicide Research and Prevention
Heidi Hjelmeland is Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Department of Mental Health, in Trondheim, Norway. As a suicide researcher since 1992, she has led or participated in several multi- and single-center studies in Europe and Africa. For the last 25 years, most of her research has been conducted in Ghana, Uganda, and Norway, together with PhD-students and colleagues from all three countries. She has published on various aspects of suicidality, such as epidemiology, attitudes, intentionality, meanings, communication, gender, culture, context, intervention, and prevention, as well as on theoretical and methodological issues. She established and led the Regional Resource Center for Suicide Research and Prevention in Central Norway from 1997 through 2003 and was there responsible for the implementation of the first Norwegian action plan for suicide prevention. She has been Vice President of International Association of Suicide Prevention (IASP; 2007-2011), Co-Editor of Suicidology Online (2010-2014), and a member of the Editorial Boards of Crisis (2004-2021) and Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior (2004-2015). In 2016, she was one of the co-founders of the international Critical Suicide Studies Network (CritSui) and remains a core member of the network’s Working Group. Her current research is within the framework of Critical Suicide Studies.
