Title:

Technology and Suicide Prevention: Evidence, Ethics and Future Directions

Dr Bethany Cliffe is a research fellow at the University of Westminster. Her main research interests are suicide and self-harm, particularly exploring how interventions can be made more accessible and acceptable to target populations. Beth’s work has investigated the use of digital tools such as self-help and peer support smartphone applications, looking at their acceptability and how they can be tailored for people who self-harm and / or have suicidal thoughts. This inter-disciplinary research has involved working with app users as well as mental health practitioners who may incorporate such digital tools in their clinical work. Currently, Beth is working on a project evaluating the use of surveillance technologies for suicide prevention in public places. This includes exploring ethical considerations, as well as how professional stakeholders and people with lived experience feel about their use. Beth uses qualitative and mixed methods approaches with a focus on learning from lived experiences.
