Suicide Prevention in Ukraine: Developments, Strategies, and Interventions

Dr. Vitalii Klymchuk is a mental health expert, researcher, and practitioner with over two decades of experience in psychosocial support, mental health policy development, and capacity building. He has made significant contributions to global mental health systems, particularly in crisis-affected regions. His commitment to integrating evidence-based approaches and community-driven care has earned him the prestigious World-Changing Alumni Award from the University of Glasgow in 2024 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to improving mental health services in Ukraine and beyond.

Vitalii has served in numerous high-impact roles, including Mental Health Policy Expert and Service Development Coordinator for the Swiss-funded “Mental Health for Ukraine” project, where he supported the design and implementation of community-based care models and mental health centres. He contributed to national-level reforms across several Ukrainian ministries, including Health, Veterans Affairs, Education, and Social Policy, focusing on strategic planning, service packages, and standards development.

As a consultant with international agencies such as UNICEF, WHO, UNDP, OSCE, and HIAS, he has designed and implemented scalable interventions for diverse populations, including children, caregivers, people with substance use disorders, and displaced communities. Notable projects include the EU-funded U-RISE and EU-PROMENS programmes, both of which aim to build capacity and facilitate cross-country exchange among mental health professionals across Europe.
